J.Fernandes City’s Finest - Aveiro in Portugal

It has a lovely old town with beautiful canals that remind you of Venice - in fact the city is known as the Portuguese Venice even though I think it’s prettier and way more clean.

Kne'Deep Records affiliate J.Fernandes first exploded onto the scene back in 2010 when he performed at the Awakenings Festival after party alongside DJ Rush. Portuguese with African roots and now based in Berlin, he’s about to release his debut EP ahead of his first ever show at Egg London having already smashed festivals like Tomorrowland and clubs such as Chicago’s The Mid and Tresor, Berlin. Here he shares the things he loves about his original hometown, Aveiro in Portugal.

J.Fernandes City’s Finest - Aveiro in Portugal

Aveiro Port

1. It has a lovely old town with beautiful canals that remind you of Venice - in fact the city is known as the Portuguese Venice even though I think it’s prettier and way more clean. The city is old and has amazing old fashioned buildings that simply give you a rich sense of its history.

2. They are great producers of salt flower here which is salt in its natural state without refining it or adding preservatives and this definitely makes a big difference in taste. Plus its healthier.

3. Ovos moles is a very well known sweet delicacy which some people have for breakfast with a nice Portuguese coffee. "Soft Eggs" are a treat and loved by many locals and visitors. It consists of a sort of custard which can be cased in rice paper shells with nautical shapes.

4. The beaches are amazing and stunning with my favourite being Praia da Barra which is located right after the bridge you need to cross to get to by car as there’s no other way. At this beach there is also a world reknown Lighthouse which is the biggest in the country. Beautifully designed it gives the beach an amazing and unique look.

5. At night the city transforms itself with some very exciting nightlife as most bars and cafe's are located in a area where during the day it;s used as a market for fresh fish and vegetables. The small narrow alleys are full of bars where most people hang out outside having a drink and socialising.
