Selected Cuts: Georgia Girl

The established artist took on the task to pick just five tracks from her overflowing record bag to give us a glimpse into her current mood…

Georgia Girl’s productions and selections draw from a rich education stemming from one of London’s most cherished record stores - Soho’s now ceased Blackmarket Records. Growing up on a healthy diet of house, techno and electro sourced from the caverns of the shop, Georgia Girl built a sound supplied by quality vinyl with a keen interest in deep, dubby grooves which took her to Asia, Europe and the USA before making the permanent move to Berlin.

Sharing her selected cuts ahead of her Berlin Berlin debut, the established artist took on the task to pick just five tracks from her overflowing record bag to give us a glimpse into her current mood…

The Longing – Melchior Productions Ltd - [a:rpia:r]

This is one of those records I take out my record bag and it always finds it's way back in. I've played this as a last track on many occasion as it holds a deeply ethereal and yet somehow beautiful quality. It lingers with you for a while afterwards. The pulsing bass line keeps the groove rolling whilst the female vocal stabs add to the drama as the track begins to unfold. A true and epic masterpiece in my opinion. One of Thomas' finest tracks for me.

Classic Dub – Anton Zap – Millions Of Moments

Anton Zap is another favourite artist and one of the things I love about this track is just how subtle it is. A full 10 minutes long, expect a journey through tiny incremental changes which keeps me hooked right to the last beat. It's so atmospheric from the outset. The sense of space he creates in this track is just outstanding! One of those tracks that all feels as though it comes together when the bass (finally) kicks in. I noticed that I like starting sets with this track. It allows you to go in most directions and feel it gives a great foundation to build a journey from.

Delta Integrale - Voigtmann - Hello?

Repeat I've been loving hearing Claus' sound develop. One of London's finest talents for sure. I really like some of his early releases and still play a few but this more recent track from him is a great example of how his style has developed. I can hear his London influences in this track and it entices a cheeky, excitable and mischievous feeling in me. I love the percussion and skippy kick. It's quite stripped back but wow - what a vibe. Always works whenever I play it.

Inveighed - Afriqua – Cure Music

Ooh now, Afriqua! What an exciting artist. Wonderful guy too! Absolutely love this whole double pack. Super minimalistic, dark, melancholic in places but always top quality production. This track is a particular favourite. It is quite trippy in places and I love his use of vocal stabs. I like playing this record to darken a vibe somewhat. Good to lose yourself in a dark corner too!

Any Ideas – Ricardo Villalobos – Perlon

Without doubt one of my favourite older Ricardo tracks! I love the sense of adventure in this record. To the untrained ear, this can seem - on the surface - quite a repetitive track, but it's far from it. The percussion is a sheer genius - the breakdowns are incredible. You can really feel the seductive sense of structure as the track begins to unfold. One of those typical '13 minutes long' Ricardo tracks which could be used as a tool as well. The reversed bell tone melody rolls along so nicely and keeps my ears and senses twisting and turning. Always has an impact when I play it.
