YokoO Interview - Egg LDN

Australian producer YokoO comes from the dreamier, floatier corners of electronic music and has released on All Day I Dream, Get Physical and Kindisch amongst others. Impossible to define his sound in one category, YokoO is known to weave an amalgam of genres throughout his DJ sets - you can expect elements of house, disco, funk, techno, afro and everything in between for a vibrant sonic experience as soon as he cues up the first the track.

We had a chat with YokoO ahead of his Egg debut this Saturday with the Leave No Trace crew in the form of Chaim (Live), Yotam Avni and our own residents Luther Vine and Kyle E…

Your debut album ‘Nothing Can Compare’ on All Day I Dream comes out on 5th April, what’s the theme behind the album?

Longing, acceptance, surrender and most of all, unconditional Love.

Did you find some days creatively challenging when you were putting the album together? If so, how did you deal with this?

I did not really, no. There never was/is any urgency for me to compose. I only do when I feel inspired. I am not one to force the process. If it flows, great! If it does not, I would just do something else.

What advice would you give to upcoming producers who are struggling to put out any music?

Keep your head down. Don’t be copycats. Stick to your guns and stay true to yourselves. Be patient - however long it takes for you to get recognised, the reward is much higher!

How do you relax or decompress after spending prolonged periods of time holed up in the studio?

I feel relaxed during the writing process, however, I enjoy breaking down my studio time by going for aimless walks, coffees, hitting the yoga studio, meditating, and reading.

You’ve spent a lot of time on the road recently, has there been a stand out moment for your whilst on tour?

I sure have. The last 5 years of my life have mostly been spent jetting about.

Brazil, Argentina and Mexico seem to be long standing favourites.

What’s next on the horizon for you?

The album world tour that begins on March the 28thwith a launch party in Miami will keep me busy traveling the globe for a few months.

Leave us with a track that sums up your sound and tell us why?

Whilst my production work thus far has been quite linear in its recognisable sound, I like to think of myself as an eclectic DJ. Therefore, naming one track that could represent my sound appears to be rather impossible . . . Intrigued? Come experience the journey!
