Ahead of his headline performance on Saturday 28th March when London Warehouse take over Egg once more, Mobilee star Re.You sat down with Pulse Radio to chat about Volume 9 of the Mobilee Back-To-Back compilation and his thoughts behind compiling such a prestigious mix CD.

"It’s a big year for Anja Schneider's mobilee Records. Not only does 2015 mark their momentous tenth anniversary; this month will also see the release of Mobilee Back To Back Vol. 9, the ninth instalment of the compilation that brings past mobilee classics to the fore. Split into two CDs, the first showcases the very best of the past year, summarising 2014 in just 20 tracks, while the second puts a guest curator at the helm, allowing them to spin their own magic on the label’s back catalogue. Both encapsulate that clear-cut mobilee sound – from Anja Schneider to Maya Jane Coles to Rodriguez Jr on CD1, to a hypnotic, percussive-fuelled mash-up on CD2.

And it’s mobilee heavyweight Re.You who took the reins for Volume 9. Using elements from previous releases reaching up to 10 years back – a synth melody from ‘Rancho Relaxo’, a spoken word sample from his own ‘Vivid’ – Re.You reconstructed those inimitable mobilee cadences to create two all new 30-minute tracks…

So how did you go about choosing the tracks for CD1?

CD1 is a compilation of the ‘best of ‘ mobilee from the past year. I chose the tracks together with Anja Schneider and Ralf Kollmann – we had a big pool of favourites so we discussed them and then chose the final 20 together.

And was it as straight forward for CD2?

CD2 was quite tough. At mobilee, the artists can do whatever they want for the second part of the compilation, so for ages I was thinking about what I should do – it was only after about two months I got the idea to do two 30-minute tracks. So I took parts from different mobilee artists’ releases – for example a vocal from an Anja Schneider release, a synth line from here, bass from there – I could pick anything from the whole Mobilee back catalogue, so I chose all the different parts I wanted and then put everything back together into two 30-minute tracks.

It must have been a painstaking process to put it all together and get it right. Would you say you’re a perfectionist?

It depends. I’m more like “fuck it, let’s do it” kind of guy. I’ve always been like that. I learn by doing. Like I also did web pages and filming stuff on my own. I don’t need to do something perfectly; I’d rather just try it. I have a lot of friends who have thoughts like, “I don’t know how to start’, but I’m more like ‘let’s start and see what happens!”

So what will you be doing this year to move things forward?

I’m going to be touring with the Mobilee Back To Back compilation this month. I have a release called ‘Fantasy’ coming out on Kompakt, which is really cool for me because I’m a big fan of the label. And I have another EP planned with Rampa, plus some live shows, which is one of our side projects. And I’ll be doing something with Moon Harbour for Matthias Tanzmann.

So if you were building a compilation to sum up your career so far, what would be on it?

Well the Rekorder series by Oliver Huntemann and Stephan Bodzin would be one of them. They did 10 vinyl-only EPs and nobody knew who it was, so when they revealed it was them it was really special moment for me. That was really great. And to represent my own career I’d have to say ‘Falling’ from 2012, that was really strong or my track with Rampa "Work" on Keinemusik. This is super difficult to pick!..."
