Weiss Interview

Ahead of the start of his new Weiss City residency here at Egg, we sat down and caught up with the man behind the music.

March 5th marked the first evening of your Weiss City residency at Egg London. After a sell out launch, you're back on the 24th June with special guests Riva Starr and Dennis Cruz. Why are these artists perfect to have on board?

Quite simply, they are on fire right now. They are two amazing artists I support and play all of their music. For us it's quite specific with the guests we want to play at Weiss City events, artists we admire and personally feel are fantastic DJs. I’m really looking forward to playing alongside them and having them on board.

How has London contributed to your music? And what do you usually look towards to draw inspiration from when you produce?

Growing up near the city has always put influences into my music, the style; the rawness of the city contributes to making a track. Everything around me on a daily basis inspires me to make music and certain sounds. London is one of the best cities in the world, with such a great and diverse clubbing scene, something that played a big part of my life growing up in the nineties. I’m very lucky to travel to a lot of different countries most weekends, so I take a lot from the different cities I visit as well.

It seems you have the whole house music scene rallying behind your work. Whose music do you like grooving to?

I’m really digging what Dense & Pika are putting out at the moment and always love what Green Velvet does. Mr Tophat & Art Alfie are producing some great chunky filtered records and I think Deepshakerz are finding their groove right now, and of course both Riva Starr and Dennis Cruz are really on fire at the moment. I'm always playing their records in my sets and Riva's label Snatch is always putting out quality music.

Weiss in five records…

1. Smokey Robinson - 'Tracks Of My Tears'

Always been my favourite Motown track and it was the first dance at my wedding.

2. Paul Simon - 'Boy In The Bubble'

This album 'Graceland' reminds me of being a kid and being in my mum's car during the '80s. She'd always play this album going shopping or driving somewhere and it's a great childhood memory.

3. Tears For Fears - 'Everybody Wants To Rule The World'

There was a distinctive sound during the '80s using these kind of synths and I think Tears For Fears were one of the bands that nailed it for me. This is such a great track that reminds of me of going to the school discos!

4. Golden Girls - 'Kinetic'

This is one of the first house/techno records I bought on vinyl and still to this day I think it sounds amazing. For me it sums up the true underground house scene when it hit the UK.

5. Metallica - 'The Unforgiven'

Growing up, I was very eclectic when it came to listening to music and Metallica were way on the other side of house etc. This band actually got me into starting up the guitar, which eventually pushed me towards learning the keyboard.

What would be your dream collaboration?

Working with someone like Quincy Jones would just be amazing. I know he doesn't make funk anymore, but to be able to go back and relive the era when he was producing for Michael Jackson would be simply amazing.

What’s next from Weiss?

I’ve literally just finished a collaboration with Green Velvet, which is coming out on Relief Records very soon. I've also just finished a new single, which we're waiting on some sample clearance ready to be released for this summer. The reaction to it in my sets has been amazing so we've got high hopes for that one! And there are a few other projects on the go with the Weiss City brand there are really exciting, more news to follow on that very soon!
