Metodi Hristov Interview

Switching to techno, working with GusGus and more from the Bulgarian star playing this Friday 4th

Egg Presents kick-starts the weekend on Friday 4th with the mighty Metodi Hristov returning to thrill the capital alongside fast rising electronic talent Wade.

Metodi Hristov's appeal is colossal. His releases are seldom missing from the download charts and win favour with tastemaker players across the board. With recent releases including ‘The Wild East EP’ on Egg's own WCF, Metodi is on fire right now.

Catching up with him ahead of the party, he told us about his Set About label, staying true to yourself and working with Iceland's GusGus...

Where are you and what are you doing right now?

I just came back home from a work out and I’m cooking some rice for lunch now!

It's been just over a year since we last spoke. How have the last 12 months been? What are some of the highlights?

In the last 12 months I was touring around the world, as usual. One of the most memorable trips was to Australia. It was my first time there. I had three gigs, one of them was at Babylon Festival, a place in the desert 300km from Melbourne. It's very dusty and surreal. I already love Sidney and Melbourne and hope to be back there soon.

I also spent a lot of time in the studio and realised that I have to change something. So step by step I switched from tech house to techno. It was big step for me and I'm very happy I did it.

Give us an update on Set About. What have been the biggest releases so far and what is coming up next?

Set About is developing very well. We are very happy with what we are doing. I think that's the most important thing. The next releases will include tracks and remixes by artists like D-Unity, Christian Hornbostel, Citizen Kain, Apollo 84 and, of course, the Set About crew.

How's your summer been so far? What stands out or are you looking forward to?

I'm spending a lot of time in the studio and I'm very satisfied with the results. A lot of new interesting projects are coming up. I'm also looking forward to my Argentina tour at the end of August. There are four cool gigs waiting there for me. I'm also very happy to see my new EP for Terminal M is doing very well in Beatport’s charts. It's already reached the Top 10 of the Techno Charts.

If you could give one bit of advice to a new DJ/producer, what would it be?

Be yourself and don't lose yourself. Ask yourself what you really like and don't follow trends too much. The most important thing is to be glad with what you’re doing.

What else do you have coming up?

At the beginning of summer GusGus contacted me regarding a collaboration for their upcoming album. We've already made one track with two version - one deep house/disco and one more intense techno version. The result is awesome! Whenever I play this track people go crazy!  Now we're working on a second track and a remix for their pilot album track 'Featherlight'. It's a dream for me... I'm more than happy to work with such unique musicians.

Name three tracks that sum up what you're likely to play at Egg.
