Influences: Weiss

Ahead of his return to the club this Friday, 10th August, Weiss shares five contrasting artists with us, who have deeply influenced his sound and direction his sonic career has taken…

A long-running classic House lover, Weiss’ sound of old-school jackin’ cuts combined with a more contemporary approach has seen him release on Toolroom, DIRTYBIRD, Play it Down and lots more over the last few years, building up a solid following throughout the UK alongside his Toolroom affiliates.

The Bristol-based producer is known to curate his own line-ups around the world under his Weiss City umbrella, playing across L.A, Brazil, Ibiza, Las Vegas and lots more, and joins us fresh off the bat of a U.S tour on August 10th.

Ahead of his return to the club, Weiss shares five contrasting artists with us who have deeply influenced his sound and direction his sonic career has taken…

Gat Decor - "Passion"(Naked Mix) Effective Records

First released in 1992 on Effective Records, this for me was one of the first House vinyl I bought when I was a kid. I remember hearing it on a retrospective House tape and needing a copy straight away. It's just great school memories for me spending my pocket money at Dance 2 Records back in the day.

For me, it has everything a House record needs. Piano chords, great bass line and never ever gets old. Still, to this day I play it in most of my sets towards the end and still gets a great reaction.

Paul Simon - "Boy In The bubble" Warner Bros.

This song is taken from Paul Simons iconic album, Graceland. The whole album is amazing and released in 1986 where I was just 5 years old. It's very influential in the way he thought outside the box creating this album.

No one had ever thought of travelling to a different country like South Africa at that time and recording live sessions of Africans playing instruments, its lyrics explore starvation and terrorism, juxtaposed with wit and optimism.

Metallica - "Unforgiven" Electra

Metallica were a big influence on me making me want to learn an instrument. It started with the classical guitar then onto the piano but this album for me from when it was released in 1991 was played every night in bed on my cassette walkman.

Bob Rock helped produce and engineer this album (The Black Album) and took Metallica to a new level giving them critical acclaimed widespread status.

Prince and The Revolution "Purple Rain" Warner Bros.

What is not to love about this record. I think if I'm right the original goes over 10mins but well worth it in my eyes. A lot of Prince songs have influenced me in my production. Very unique in his style which I've tried to do and sound different from everyone else.

CeCe Rogers - "Someday"

I remember when this came out in 1987 and was like wow. Yes, I was only 6 going on 7 but that's what House music did to me at such a young age. The piano hook has been sampled so many times through the years and why not because it's just so catchy. The track was produced and arranged by the legend Marshall Jefferson.
