Halloween Weekend Selection
Ahead of Egg's Disturbing London and Forever Hollywood parties this weekend, check our Halloween-inspired music selection
Halloween arrives this weekend with a twisted twosome of blood soaked parties at Egg London.
On Friday 28th October, the
chart-topping Tinie Tempah presents Disturbing London's official
Halloween Party. With his label's name already providing an apt name
for the ocassion, he's joined by tour DJ, 1 XTRA's DJ Charlesy, and a
cast of friends from across the spectrum of UK talent. With Katy B
(DJing alongside Emerald), Shift K3y and Pay As You Go Cartel/Roll
Deep's DJ Target amongst those dressing up for the occasion,
everything from house to grime until the twilight hours. More info
and tickets here.
It's the Hollywood Forever Halloween Party on Saturday 29th. Brazilian techno maestro Gui Boratto heads the line up with a live set, drawing on a catalogue that includes tracks like 'Arquipélago' and 'Beautiful Life', the latter taken from the first on his four albums. He's joined by Baltimore's finest house pairing DJ Spen & Karizma, who have the ability to move from sweet lipped soul to beats as rough as the treats of B'more. More info and tickets here.
To get you in the mood, we picked five tracks from across the musical spectrum which were clearly made with Halloween in mind.
Levon Vincent - 'Tubular Bells
(Oldfield)'
Levon Vincent, master of dark New York techno, samples Mike Oldfield, master of '70s prog rock. It sounds like an odd pairing (alright, it is an odd pairing), but 'Tubular Bells' provided the theme to 'The Exorcist', which brings to mind the usual dread dance floor vibes served up by Vincent, who prefers track titles like 'Fear' and Anti-Corporate Music'. Cheer up Vincey, it's a party.
Helen - 'Witch'
Italo-disco cast its '80s net far and
wide when it came to vocal subject matter, even stretching as far as
invading
penguins. This 1983 classic nods its pointy
hat to broomstick riding ladies of the night and costs a pretty penny
on Discogs, although its been reissued by the excellent Dark Entries.
Silver Bullet - 'Bring Forth the
Guillotine'
Name checking such horrors as The
Twilight Zone, the Kraken and Tim Westwood, Silvah Bullet's 1989
Whodini-sampling 'Bring Forth the Guillotine' helped oversee the
early '90s jump from hip-hop to hardcore while also conjuring up
images of rolling severed heads.
Brainbug - 'Nightmare'
A brain bug is apparently real: look up
Toxoplasma Gondii if you're a cat owner and fancy genuinely
terrifying yourself. This 1997 trance anthem isn't quite as
threatening but was a massive track back in the day.
Felix Da Housecat – 'Silver Screen
Shower Scene (Jacques Lu Cont remix)'
In keeping with the Hollywood Forever
theme of Saturday's Halloween Party, Felix Da Housecat's 'Silver
Screen Shower Scene' harks back to the glamour of the golden era of
Hollywood. This doesn't strictly qualify it for the list, but check this Jaques Lu Conts remix and then tell us those synths don't sound uncannily like
the Ghost
Busters' theme... Spooky.
