Get to know: Braunbeck

We caught up with Sol Eterno boss ahead of his Berlin Berlin debut...

An intrinsic element to Berlin’s nightlife, Braunbeck has been at the forefront of the electronic scene after running his own event series in the city over the last ten years. The spark into the underground music scene was set off for Fabian Braunbeck through meeting prominent artists on the Berlin circuit and observing their sets and productions, before digging for tunes to define his sound while building his mixing technique.

Set to soar in 2018, the visceral sounds of the artist have come to light thanks to a strong work ethic behind his Sol Eterno imprint which solely focuses on the freedom and fun aspect of electronic music - something that can easily get lost in today’s world of Beatport sales, production deadlines and a constant slew of releases to stay on top of in the business of running a label. Delving deeper in the young Berliner’s soundscape and approach to music - from record digging in Berlin to the latest emerging talent to come under his radar - we caught up with the man himself ahead of his Berlin Berlin debut coming up 17th February…

Tell us about your past experience running parties and events over the last ten years? Any crazy moments that you’ll never forget?

I did my first party when I was 18 I think…we started at small bars and venues in my hometown, later in the bigger cities like Stuttgart, which is my home area in southern Germany. The real club and rave experience came around 2009 when I started working for Club Rocker33, which was without a doubt the best place to go out in that time. So we had some proper parties there. Thursdays became a top-secret date to go out as a local. For example, Konstantin Sibold and Leif Müller started in our club on Thursdays with their “Common Sense People” Series back in 2010.

About the crazy stories…once my boss called me to pick him up before a meeting at the club, so I took the car and went to his place. When I arrived at his place he didn’t answer the phone or the doorbell … I saw his window was open, so I called his name. He appears at the window, at midday, naked with a huge dildo on a chain in his hand…. Leaning out of the window, waving this thing around shouting “give me more time or come up here son”. So I was waiting for 15 more minutes I think… Of course we arrived too late for the meeting, but still, was a nice sunny day. I remember a lot of crazy stuff from that time, especially club and artist stories. But what happens backstage, stays backstage.

What productions have you got lined up for releasing over the coming months?

I just did a remix of ‘Enigma’ for Alex Ranerro which will be out on King Street Sounds soon. Another remix is in the making for Sifa`s Depth label. Also lined up is my second EP on my own imprint Sol Eterno which will be out just before summer.

What’s the ethos behind your co-owned imprint, ‘Sol Eterno’?

We wanted to be independent, able to get our music out, whenever we wish so, without waiting months and months until the bigger labels fit their release schedule.  Our freedom to put out what we are happy with was more important to us, not just to get a good position in the charts, to make it fit into the “world” of successful club music, I don’t want to think about that kind of stuff while making music.

It’s a lot of fun to do music in the studio, I want to keep that fun and don’t get a headache thinking about…will it get played here, will it get featured there … fuck that. Make music, have fun, release what you like and stand by it, your own footmark on your own path, your very own sound.

So the main ethos is, don’t care about the others, have fun.

Imagine you’ve been given the task to show a newcomer around Berlin’s electronic music scene, the best places to buy records and go for food and drinks. Where would you take them?

I would say OYE Record Store is the place to go in Berlin, to shop for records. Also, Innervisions very own Muting The Noise Store is pretty nice. There is a proper bar run by amazing people in Neukölln called MORPHIN Bar, great drinks, nice crowd. If you are in Berlin and we were going to go out for the whole night, this would be the perfect warm up! Club-wise I would recommend Watergates Waterfloor on a Sunday morning, always a great energy and vibe down there. ://about blank and Berghain/Panorama Bar are of course two more places not to miss in Berlin, I think you don’t have to say much more about them.

Finally, leave us with three tunes from emerging artists that are on your radar at the moment?

iO – Open Mind

Binh – Chalzedon

Priku – Morning Haze (Traumer Edit)

BDP – Hard Boiled
