DJ Mag 25th Anniversary: Enrico Sangiuliano

Joining the iconic UK dance mag's celebrations this Saturday, Drumcode's Enrico Sangiuliano looks back over his last 25 years

He may have been a bowl-haired little kid (see below) when DJ Mag was launched, but these days Enrico Sangiuliano has ascended to techno's upper echelons. From his early days playing illegal raves and winning remix competitions, his productions are now at home on scene leading labels including Drumcode and Tronic. As a DJ, meanwhile, his non-stop schedule has taken him far and wide across Europe this year. Next stop is DJ Mag's 25 Years of DJ Mag (Part 1), where he joins Chris Liebing, The Advent and more.

With the party on Saturday October 8th, just a few days away, we asked him to look back over his own last quarter of a decade and pick out some of the highlights. Get full info and tickets for the party here.

Where were you and what were you doing in 1991?

I still believed in Santa Claus and was enjoying my childhood in Reggio Emilia, Italy, because I was five years old.

Can you remember the first time that you read DJ Mag and who or what was in it?

It was when The Prodigy released 'The Fat Of The Land', back in 1996. What a milestone. After reading the mag, I bought the album. It was my first music purchase!

When was the first time that you appeared in DJ Mag and what was it for?

The first time I appeared in DJ Mag was 2013, I got a great review about my 'Groove Mission' EP. From that point on I was in it quite often luckily! Last time they accused me of being responsible for the Techno Takeover on Beatport…

Looking back over the last 25 years....

What moment would you like to experience again?

My first appearance at Street Rave Parade in Bologna in 2003. It was 24-hours of pure madness in town with 150,000 crazy raver., I was 17 and I played on a truck from 9 to 11am in front of 10.000 people. That’s how I learned what 'big' means!

What could you have done differently if you knew what you know now?

Honestly, I wouldn’t change anything. I'm fine with what I did and how I did it, sometimes unconsciously, sometimes calculating and calibrating. I’m happy about how it went, everything happened in a genuine way, I learned from my mistakes and I always feel at the beginning of long path.

What has been the biggest surprise?

Being involved with DJ Mag for their 25th anniversary party, it’s a beautiful surprise and a big encouragement for the future, it means a lot to me!

What five records that are so timeless that you will always play them?

Ben Klock - 'Subzero'

Age Of Love - 'The Age Of Love'

>

Trentemoller - 'Take Me Into Your Skin'

Daft Punk – 'Rollin’ & Scratchin’'

Laurent Garnier - 'Crispy Bacon'

Where do you expect to be in 25 years time?

I’d like it to be another big surprise. I hope I’ll be still able to live thanks to the music.

Make one prediction about how life will have changed by 2041?

Speakers will be incredible quality, so clubs will sound super good! Studios will have a huge amount of technology! If we take care and respect our planet, we’ll all have more time to be dedicated to art and culture. Finally, we’ll be all invited to DJ Mag's 50 Years Anniversary, which will be in the stratosphere!
