Daniel Miller Interview

The Mute founder talks '70s roots, '80s and '90s global success and playing techno at the Egg LDN Birthday Weekend Part II

It's almost impossible to overstate the importance of Daniel Miller's contribution to electronic music. Setting up the Mute label to release his own debut single 'Warm Leatherette' in 1978 under the name The Normal, he went on to break acts such as Depeche Mode, Yazoo, Fad Gadget and Nitzer Ebb. It's Novamute sub-label then provided a home for the emerging techno sound of the likes of Plastikman (aka Richie Hawtin), Luke Slater, Speedy J and more.

Soon to re-launch Novamute, in the last decade or so he's turned his hand to DJing after being invited to warm up for Sandwell District at Berghain. Playing a mix of contemporary techno, Egg LDN is honoured to host Miller as one of the guest of our Egg LDN Birthday Weekend Part II this Saturday May 6th where he joins the likes of Green Velvet, Enrico Sangiuliano, Tobi Neumann and many more. In the run up to this, he spoke to Data Transmission about starting out DJing Abba, achieving sudden worldwide success with Mute and travelling to North Korea for the first ever gig from a Western artist. Read it here.
